Buprenorphine's Role in Opiate Treatment

In the interest of preparing counselors to assist physicians in the direct care for the opiate addicted individuals, NAADAC, The Association for Addiction Professionals, offers this training manual as a supplement to our workshop presentations. Due to the dynamic nature of addictions treatment, this document should be used as a guide rather than a definitive reference.

This manual includes various chapters created to guide the addiction professional through the stages of treatment of an opiate addict and an introduction to Buprenorphine. The attached appendices include assessment tools, reference guides, and data on Buprenorphine that will enable the clinician to better serve their clientele.

Due to the relatively new use of Buprenorphine for treatment of opiate addiction, this guide is a must have for addiction professionals working with opiate addicted individuals.

Perceptual Adjustment Therapy: A Positive Approach to Addictions Treatment

This book, designed specifically for addiction treatment professionals, offers an approach to addiction therapy by addressing the client’s perceptions and what can be done to change them. Perceptual Adjustment Therapy (PAT) uses a client’s early memories as a road map of perceptions- an indicator of the client’s belief system and the guiding fictions that build perceptual filters to support those beliefs. These perceptions are used to identify and understand an individual’s positive intents and underlying positive desires that they really want to fulfill. Authors James Holder III, LPAC, NCAC II and Thurman Williams III shows the therapist how to assist the client in achieving integration and wholeness through various techniques borrowed from Gestalt Therapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Because it offers individualized treatment in an accelerated time frame, PAT is extremely valuable for professionals working under the constraints of managed care, oversized caseloads, and stressful institutional environments.

The FACE Screening For Pre-Dependency and Substance Abuse

An important responsibility of any physician or professional is recognizing chemical dependency to medication. Equally important to the health of the patient is identifying a potential dependency before it begins. This booklet, designed especially for physicians and addiction professionals, is a compilation of criteria to consider before prescribing benzodiazepines, barbiturates, and opiates to a patient. Created and tested by James A. Holder, MA, LPC, this quick, four-step process will more effectively identify patients who are at extreme risk of abusing certain medications and substances so alternative treatment can be provided.

Also available is a version of the FACE Screening for Pre-Dependency and Substance Abuse for Personal Use by clients. Everyone knows a family member, friend, or co-worker who is at risk for medication and substance abuse. This booklet will help these individuals systematically identify the risk factors present in their own lives and convey this information to their physician to ensure better healthcare. This booklet is designed to be distributed in waiting rooms, facilities, offices, or virtually anywhere accessible to the general public.

Dynamics of Money in Treatment: Helping Your Clients Create Financial Health

When a client begins treatment for psychoactive chemical abuse, the counselor should not only provide the resources necessary to stop abusing, but also the tools needed to maintain a healthy and responsible life. Often times, proper money management is a necessity to further ensure the client’s sobriety, but is overlooked during treatment. Through this course, The Dynamics of Money in Treatment: Helping Your Clients Create Financial Health,* author Judith Gruber, LCSW, CCET outlines how money is used as a reflection of the client’s beliefs, attitudes, and self-perceptions, how the client relates to money, and how the client’s misconceptions and self-imposed images lead to addictive behavior. These tools will allow the counselor to assist a client in making responsible, sober choices with money on a daily basis. This course is designed for any professional or student who works in a therapeutic, counseling, social service, human service, or mental health environment.

* This course has been approved for 10 credits towards the New York State CASAC, CPP and CPS credentialing under the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services, Education and Training Provider Number 0309. This program has been approved by NASW-New York State for 10 contact hours under approval number A-684.
