Pretty lengthy advertisement for Melanie Solomons new book. The title,
"AA Not the Only Way," should have been set off in quotes so we'd know the
post is promoting it.

My intention was to provide another viewpoint.
I found it an
interesting contribution , given this papers article posted a couple of
months ago on the "miracles" of attending AA.
By the way a
recommended google search would be: "Alcoholics Anonymous and the German
Court Case."
Talk about Public Controversy!

I read that article some time ago and it surprised me that the General
Service Office pursued the guy so diligently. They usually stay with a
warning letter but this guy apparently thought he could plagiarize
copywrited material at will and he really carried it to
extremes.
Eddy there are all kinds of viewpoints about alcoholism
as you well know. Schick Schaedle, Rational Recovery, Women for Sobriety
and a host of others all help SOME alcoholics. Alcoholism is such a
terrible illness in the damage it does to those that have it and those
around them that whatever works to get that person sober is a good
deal.
AA started in 1935 at a time when the medical profession said
a real alcoholic couldn't BE helped and proved them wrong. From that
beginning a lot of other avenues of research opened. Even the book,
"Alcoholics Anonymous," says, "We know only a little. More will be
revealed ...,"
So, take a rest why don't you? We're helping 5% of
the folks who come to us and so are each of the other programs out there.
All the programs there are, combined, probably don't help more than 10-12%
of all the alcoholics that exist. But, like the kid throwing starfish back
in the ocean one by one, "They sure made a difference to this one."

Eddy:
You still havnt figured out that in America we have this
thing called freedom that allows people to choose their method of
addiction treatment. Last time I checked nobody is forced to use the AA
method.

Yes, yes, we know - "..anything but work the steps ..." That's an
excellent site for anyone who is anti AA, they can feel quite comfortable
there. I feel most comfortable in a meeting.

Eddy, quite some time ago you started a thread with the title something
like, "AA shills will routinely plant articles in the news ..." To date I
have not seen a single thread started by anyone claiming to be an AA
member that touts the program but you have posted several threads that
disparage AA. So, who is the 'shill' here?

How so? A shill tries to get people to enter into something that will
eventualy benefit the shill. Like the barker at a side show tent will have
a shill in the audience trying to convince people from his experience that
they should go in & see the show. I don't see any of that in the
article you refer to. One person is telling the reader that a friend had
success in AA and in the proces the writer learned some things about
alcoholism that he hadn't known. For each 'horror story' in the article
your first URL leads to, there has to be some success stories.

Good one Chi. And it gives several alternative sources of help. Wonder
why Eddy doesn't go to some place like this for help?
