Shriners Hospitals for Children – Lexington, KY FAQ 1. How long has the hospital been in Lexington? Since 1926. It originally occupied a wing of the old Good Samaritan Hospital on South Limestone and was originally dedicated primarily to the care of polio cases. The present location on Richmond Road was established in 1955 and a replacement facility was built in 1988. It is one of 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. 2. What treatments does it offer today? Lexington Shriners Hospital today continues to specialize in treating children and teens with orthopaedic conditions. With a core medical staff of board certified physicians and surgeons, types of conditions treated range from simple fractures to complex diseases of the spine. 3. What is the scope of the work of Shiners Hospitals for Children - Lexington? At any one time, the Lexington Shriners Hospital is providing expert pediatric orthopaedic care to 11,000 children and families from Kentucky and the surrounding states. The highest number of patients comes from Central and Eastern Kentucky. Physician office visits, outpatient surgery, and inpatient surgery are provided by a team dedicated to caring for children. Diagnostics, orthotics, prosthetics, and physical and occupational therapies are all located at the hospital. Each patient is assigned a nurse care manager, who assists the family and ensures care received at the hospital is coordinated with services provided at home. Children up to age 18 with orthopaedic conditions are eligible for care, regardless of the families’ ability to pay. The volume of our patients has more than doubled since 1988. Shriners Hospitals for Children have also been at the forefront of research and service excellence. Our physicians presented results of five studies at the 2014 American Academy of Orthopaedics Surgeons meeting. Staff has given nine additional presentations at six national meetings and has published eight reports in scientific journals in the past year. In 2013 the hospital received a national award for consistently achieving 95% patient satisfaction. 4. What are the sources of your funding? Like any hospital, we have recurring revenues. We are also supported by 14 regional Shrine Temples, including the Oleika Temple in Lexington, the Kosair Temple in Louisville and the El Hasa Temple in Ashland as well as temples in Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana and Tennessee.But we also receive donations from generous businesses and individuals nationwide. 5. What has been your relationship with the University of Kentucky? We have had a collaborative relationship with UK for decades. Many of our doctors hold faculty positions at the University of Kentucky. We also provide on-site education to interns, residents, and students in other medical fields.
